Sanga Print Collection

In questo progetto sto esplorando la stampa Sanganeri. Sanganer è una piccola città nello stato del Rajasthan nota per la stampa a blocchi. Progettano e creano blocchi di legno fatti a mano e poi trasferiscono le stampe a mano su diversi tipi di tessuti, ma il cotone è il tessuto più comunemente usato dagli artigiani lì. Si tratta di un mestiere e di un artigianato praticato nella regione da circa 500 anni. La maggior parte degli artigiani apprende le abilità tramandate dai loro antenati.
Ho lavorato con artigiani della regione per questo progetto. Lavorare con una piccola azienda indipendente è stato interessante soprattutto durante la peggiore ondata di covid in India. Molte fabbriche e artigiani hanno smesso di lavorare e il coordinamento e la comunicazione era molto difficile da gestire a distanza da Roma. Tuttavia, sono riuscito a trovare una persona che impiega un piccolo team di produttori di blocchi di legno.
Ho preso un blocco esistente dal loro archivio come blocco di ricerca iniziale e poi ho fatto creare pezzi speciali per me. Il primo è stato un piccolo blocco piatto che può essere utilizzato per stampare o creare effetti in rilievo sulla pelle. Il mio secondo pezzo era un cuneo di legno su misura con dettagli di design intagliati a mano del mio primo blocco. Questo era un pezzo unico da creare poiché l’artigiano non aveva mai creato nulla di simile prima. L’artigiano ha lavorato solo su superfici piane e per lui lavorare su una forma 3D curva era un nuovo progetto per lui. Abbiamo creato la zeppa di base secondo la nostra forma di scarpe a Delhi nel legno appropriato e adatto per l’artigiano su cui intagliare il disegno. Sia il blocco piatto che il cuneo hanno impiegato 1 settimana ciascuno per realizzarli.
Per questo progetto sono state prese due direzioni. In primo luogo per le scarpe con l’idea di ispirarsi alle pantofole e alle scarpe indiane e in secondo luogo ai tanti diversi stili di turbanti in India per le borse di questa collezione.
Per le scarpe ho optato per una versione fresca, lussuosa e moderna della classica scarpa indiana. La colorazione ispirata alla città di Sanganer è stata realizzata con colori freschi e luminosi. E per le borse abbiamo esaminato i diversi stili di turbanti in India. I turbanti sono indossati dagli uomini in India e vengono prima creati pieghettando e attorcigliando il tessuto. Ho manipolato l’idea di torsioni e pieghe che si trovano sui turbanti in pelle e tessuto per creare nuove forme e dettagli di design per la borsa.
In questa collezione sono state progettate una varietà di diverse altezze di tacco che vanno da scarpe basse a scarpe alte 10 cm e per le borse ho disegnato una collezione che va da borse a mano, a tracolla, pochette, Boston e shopper.
In this project I am exploring Sanganeri printing. Sanganer is a small town in the state of Rajasthan well known for block printing. They design and create hand crafted wooden blocks and then transfer the prints by hand onto different kinds of fabrics but cotton is the most commonly used fabric by artisans there. It is a trade and craft that has been practiced in the region for about 500 years. Most of the artisans learn the skills from passed down from their forefathers.
I have worked with artisans in the region for this project. Working with small and an independent company was interesting especially during the worst wave of covid in India. A lot of factories and artisans stopped working and coordination and communication was very difficult to manage remotely from Rome. However, I did manage to find one person who employs a small team of wooden block makers.
I sourced one existing block from their archive as my initial research block and then had special pieces created for me. First was a small flat block that can be used for printing or creating embossed effects on leather. My second piece was a bespoke wooden wedge with hand carved design details of my first block. This was a unique piece to create as the artisan hadn’t created anything like it before. The artisan has only worked on flat surfaces and for him to work on a curved 3D shape was a new project for him. We created the basic wedge according to our shoe last in Delhi in the appropriate and suitable wood for the artisan to carve the design on. Both, the flat block and the wedge took the artisan 1 week each to make.
Two directions were taken for this project. First for the shoes with the idea of taking inspiration from the Indian slippers and shoes and second with the many different styles of turbans in India for the bags in this collection.
For shoes I went for a fresh, luxurious and modern take on the classic Indian shoe. Colorway inspired from the city of Sanganer was achieved with fresh and bright colors. And for bags looked at the different styles of turbans in India. Turbans are worn by men in India and are first created by pleated and twisting the fabric. I manipulated the idea of twisting and pleating found on turbans to leather and fabric to create new shapes and design details for the bag.
A variety of different heel heights ranging from flat to 10cm high shoes are designed in this collection and for bags I have designed a collection ranging from hand, shoulder, clutch, Boston and shopper bags.
