Black & Tulips

Il punto di partenza della collezione è stato il seicento olandese, in particolare l’inizio di questo secolo, in cui si sviluppò una vera e propria moda per i tulipani in quanto considerati simboli di potere e ricchezza.
Gli abiti severi rigorosamente bianchi e neri di mercanti e donne nobili erano in netto contrasto con la passione per questo fiore. I tulipani più ambiti erano quelli che presentavano vivaci striature.
L’icona di riferimento è Gloria Vanderbilt ereditiera americana di origini olandesi. Il suo modo di vestire durante i decenni è stato una commistione tra ciò che in quel momento era di moda e la sua visione personale, dove alta moda, completi maschili e costume si incontrano. Lei aveva coniato il termine “Tabletop dress” per descrivere le proprie mise, studiate per apparire nelle fotografie delle cene dove veniva spesso fotografata dalla vita in su. Questi abiti presentavano colli importanti e stravaganti oppure scollature dal sapore grafico. Uno di questi abiti lo indossò al noto evento Black and White ideato da Truman Capote.
Un altro elemento importante del progetto è il grafismo che unisce volumi, references storiche e tulipani. In particolare i volumi dei capi della collezione sono ispirati dalla couture degli anni ‘50-‘60, facendo riferimento al couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga.
Un aspetto essenziale della progettazione è stato immaginare che cosa avrebbe contaminato oggi il suo guardaroba. Sarebbe stata interessata allo street-wear? Al mondo active?
The starting point of the collection is the Dutch XVII century, especially the beginning of this century, in which a real fashion has been developed for tulip flowers: they were considered symbols of power and wealth. The strict black and white clothes of merchants and noble women were in stark contrast to the passion for this flower. The most coveted tulips were those with bright streaks.
The icon of reference is Gloria Vanderbilt, an American heiress of Dutch descent. Her way of dressing during the decades was a mixture of what was in fashion at that time and her personal vision, in which high fashion, men’s suits and costume traditions meet. She coined the expression “Tabletop dresses” to describe her outfits, designed to appear in dinners’ photographs where she was often photographed from the waist up. These dresses had important and extravagant necks or necklines with a graphic flavor. One of these dresses has been worn at the famous Black and White event designed by Truman Capote.
Another important element of this project consists in the graphism, which combines volumes, historical references and tulips. In particular, the volumes of the garments in this collection have been inspired by couture designs of the ’50s-60s, especially referring to the couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga.
An essential aspect of design was to imagine what would contaminate his wardrobe today. Would he be interested in street-wear fashion? In the active world?
