Luck on fire
La mia tesi esplora l’evento contro-culturale noto come Burning Man attraverso le storie dei partecipanti di Montreal. Burning Man è senza dubbio il “freak epicentre” dei movimenti artistici contro culturali del Nord America. Dal suo inizio nel 1986, è cresciuto da poche dozzine di amici seduti intorno al fuoco di San Francisco, a oltre cinquantamila persone che convergono nel mezzo del Black Rock Desert, Nevada, per costruire una città temporanea, viverci per una settimana e poi fare i bagagli senza lasciare traccia.
La mia collezione prende ispirazione dall’evento contro culturale chiamato Burning Man attraverso un processo rituale. Ho cercato di illustrare come partecipare alla contro cultura sociale. Specifici eventi possono portare alla creazione di pratiche morali alternative che alimentano la creazione di comunità. Queste comunità non si organizzano secondo le definizioni convenzionali di comunità e sono spesso spontanee e temporanee. Questi spazi sono stati chiamati Zone Autonome Temporanee (TAZ). TAZ consente ai partecipanti di reimmaginare e reinventare le regole per l’appartenenza collettiva che costituiscono ciò che è la comunità e come viene vissuta. Molti dei partecipanti ha sottolineato quanto sia stata importante la loro esperienza in Burning Man per lo sviluppo di pratiche morali alternative. Burning Man, può quindi essere visto come un pellegrinaggio che insegna ad abbracciare pratiche morali contro-culturali nella vita di tutti i giorni. Queste pratiche vengono viste come nuovi movimenti sociali i cui obiettivi sono rivitalizzare i valori culturali attraverso i mondi della vita dei partecipanti
Durante il festival la città è un Paese delle Meraviglie sottosopra: progetti artistici e performance che invertono nettamente le norme della quotidianità.
My thesis explores the counter-cultural event known as Burning Man through the stories of Montreal participants. Burning Man is the “epicentre freak” of the artistic movements against culture of North America. Since 1986, it has grown from a few dozen friends sitting around the San Francisco Fire, to over fifty thousand people converging in the middle of the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, to build a temporary city, live there for a week and then pack without a trace.
My collection takes inspiration from the counter-cultural event called Burning Man through a ritual process. I tried to illustrate how to participate in the social counter-culture. Specific events can lead to the creation of alternative moral practices that fuel community creation. These communities are not organized according to conventional definitions of communities and are often spontaneous and temporary. These spaces have been called Temporary Autonomous Zones (TAZ). TAZ allows participants to reimagine and reinvent the rules for collective belonging, how the community is and how it is experienced. Many of the participants stressed how important their experience in Burning Man was for the development of alternative moral practices. Burning Man, can therefore be seen as a pilgrimage that teaches to embrace counter-cultural moral practices in everyday life. These practices are seen as new social movements whose goals are to revitalize cultural values across the worlds of participants’ lives
During the festival, the city is a Wonderland upside down: artistic projects and performances that dramatically reverse the norms of everyday life.
